Painkiller ala Soggy Dollar Bar in Jost Van Dyke - British Virgin Island

Just a reminder... Give away... $49 worth of island cooking adventures coming your way... Click HERE and read yesterday's post for details.

But today it is all about the rum...

Legend has it (just ask 'em, and if it's printed in Wikipedia, it must be true), this drink was invented in the 1970's at the Soggy Dollar Bar on the British Virgin Island of Jost Van Dyke.  The Soggy Dollar is a favorite of mine (when I can get to it).  Park a boat and swim to the beach (thus the name, as everyone pays with wet money).

I sat at the bar for awhile, entranced by how fast the bartenders could whip these up, but also watching a specialty tool in use.

The Nutmeg Grater

I saw it in use, and just had to have one.  A quick order from Amazon.com, and even here, relatively fast shipping, and I had it for my next in a long line of rum soaked weekends (rum soaked but well garnished).  Look, convenient place to hold whole nutmegs waiting to flavor my drink...

So, new toy... a single use kitchen tool (sorry Alton), all that's missing is the rum... and the mixers.

2 parts Orange Juice
1 part Cruzan Coconut infused Rum (the classic recipe calls for light rum)
1 part Pineapple Juice
1 part Cream of Coconut
ground Nutmeg

I serve mine in a tall glass, holds 16 ounces.  So, for one drink I use a 1/3rd cup measuring scoop per part.  Leaves enough room for a few ice cubes.  If making two of them, I double the ingredients (that's all that fit in the blender at one time).  If using a rocks glass, use a 1/4er size measuring scoop.

Combine everything in a blender, including a bit of ground nutmeg... blend for about 30 seconds.

Pour in a glass

add the ice

garnish with an additional pinch of ground nutmeg...

Try to arrange a cabana boy to serve these on the beach, to your wife's friends that are visiting from South Dakota...

  2. I think the good things in life are always about the rum. It kind of reminds me of eggnog but with an island twist. And things are always better with an island twist!

  3. That looks like a drink Bev would jump all over and I believe we may have the ingredients.

  4. I'm normally a beer and wine girl, but when I do venture back into the world of mixed drinks, it's always coconut rum and pineappple juice. It's my favorite : ) I would love this drink, especially with nutmeg. I don't know if I've ever had freshly grated nutmeg, but I suspect, like pepper, it's better freshly ground. I might have to find my own nutmeg grater.

It looks like you're having fun down there!

  16. LMAO of that last shot, Cabana boy Dave is your new moniker.

I'm going to have to make this at the pool next weekend for our neighbors. I have a can of the cream of coconut that was an extra from a thai dish I was making.

  17. This would be perfect served at The Tiki Hut! I already have a nutmeg grinder (for as long as I can remember), but I do need to find a cabana boy for sure!
