I lost 12 Pounds in 7 days - My Diet Update

A few days ago, I made the announcement that I was following the 17 day diet for the next 17 days.  My chief taste tester (my wife) has requested the diet in preparation for the wedding of the century (in our little corner of the world anyway).  I do know from experience that diets are difficult enough, but impossible if the cook and support system is not behind it.  Besides, you are blessed to not have to see the size of my ass from behind my posts.  It certainly would not hurt me to drop a bit.  Actually, this morning marks day 7.  Thought I might update you all on the last 7 days...

7 miserable days.

BUT, results, results, results... I have pooped and peed my way to losing 12 pounds in a week.  More on that in a minute...

The 17 day Diet is the latest in a long long long list of quick fixes to a lifestyle gone wrong.  As quick fixes go (say to get ready for swimsuit season or for a wedding, this is about as good as it gets.

This is not a starvation diet.  You are given a list of foods (raw vegetables mostly, some low sugar fruits, chicken and fish that you can have unlimited amounts.  All my beloved spices are allowed, as well as  "condiments in moderation" (but mustard is preferred).  But, bread, pasta, cream, butter and Oils are not allowed (with the exception of 2 TBS of Olive Oil a day).  Eggs are allowed in moderation... 2 a day or 4 egg whites a day.  No cheese (except low fat Parmesan).

Now, to be fair, the diet is made up of 4 "phases".  During each phase, additional foods and recipes are added.  So in reality, this is a 68 day diet.  The science involved claims that you can trick your metabolism to eat belly fat by varying the types and amounts of food you eat during each cycle.  I am only talking about the first cycle, the accelerated cycle or what I have grown to call the - cleanse cycle.

8 full glasses of water a day (coffee, tea and juices do not count... just water) guarantees your carpet will get wear marks between where ever you hang out and the bathroom.  Jackie found this particularly distracting as she had court last week (her job, not as a criminal).  You are allowed to leave at the pleasure of the judge, and not at the obligation of your bladder.

The #2 reason I call this a cleansing stage is #2... yeap, all those vegetables and fruit is a shock to the system used to being lined with bread, flour, pasta and butter.  Vegetables are easier for your system to break down, and combined with the water in your system, you go and go and go.  To be blunt, there isn't much in the system to pack.  So my #2's are in name and point of exit only.  Anyone interested in trying this particular diet should be advised to stay close to a bathroom and invest in lots of Charmin.

So, after all these years, I must confess that my ex-wife was right all along.  I was full of crap... At least 12 pounds worth.

But, like I said... It is not a starvation diet.  For example this was our Sunday morning breakfast...

An egg white omelet (2 egg whites, 1/2 Vadalia Onion (diced), 1 Poblano Pepper (Diced, beautiful color), 1/2 diced Roma Tomato)

Cottage Cheese (about 1/2 a cup)

Sprinkle a little sweet paprika for color, seasoning and presentation.

A handful of Grapes (each sliced in half so I can be fooled  that there are more).

And you are pretty full for awhile...

1 meal down, 16 2/3rds of the way through your 17 miserable days.

I miss bread, cheese and cooking with butter most of all, but it was fun to get back into the jeans that make my butt look good.

Oh, and Jackie is doing just as well as I am.  Not the high number (percentage wise she is), but she didn't have as much to lose.  She is down a dress size in a week, and is very happy so far.

Plus, everyone can tell you that I am much more full of crap than she is.

BTW, I took last month mostly off from posting.  Several reasons, but I am back.  Planning to return to daily posting starting Today.

Please make sure you come back tomorrow.  I have a special post.  not only will you NOT have to listen to me (I have an interview with a fellow blogger and author), but you will be treated to a recipe from a book being released tomorrow.

Before I started my diet, I whipped up a batch of her Blue Cheese and Garlic Fondue (recipe in the book that she was gracious enough to give me a preview of the recipe).

  2. Hmmm interesting. I'll be excited to see how you guys fare for the long term but as a quick fix it doesn't seem so terrible!

    Well...no pasta seems pretty terrible.

  3. Congrats on the quick loss - but, I agree, the long term is the tricky part with this type - as you know, I'm sure :-)) I did it the even easier way (but much longer) way, a few minor tweaks and I've lost 17 lbs in about 10 months. Must be something about the number.... And I still ae pizza!

  4. Wow, congrats on the weight loss. But, I would rather eat whatever I want and dance and exercise it off. :)

  5. I am less a fan of diets and more of fan of permanent eating changes, but I'm interested to see how this works out for you, especially considering how much you've lost already!

  7. Congratulations on the weight loss Dave. I agree with Chris. I think you might be in hell, but good for you for supporting Jackie. Believe me, it will pay off. I would expect no less from my husband.
